Transboundary - by Meriç Algün Ringborg
2. JULI TIL 11. SEPTEMBER 2016, NIVEAU 5
The exhibition Transboundary by Meriç Algün Ringborg (b.1983) forms part of the exhibition series ARoS FOCUS // NEW NORDIC where ARoS focuses on new Nordic art. Transboundary features a number of installations where Ringborg, inspired by personal experiences, focuses on themes such as identity, affiliation, and the current border-related problems in Europe.
- Ringborg’s art is thought-provoking and highly relevant in the light of what is happening in Europe and the world today. Her narratives are important, because they give voice to the many people who, for a variety of reasons, are faced with having to change nationality, and draw attention to the cultural and national trends stirring in Europe today, says museum director Erlend G. Høyersten, ARoS.
BRIEFLY ABOUT RINGBORG AND THE EXHIBITION
Meriç Algün Ringborg was born in Turkey and is now living in Stockholm. Her works include billboards, photos, and sound. They are about coming face to face with systems, language barriers, and about the feeling of being caught between two identities. Especially for this exhibition, she has created an installation of 170 EU souvenirs (Promotion Europe), addressing European identity, and directing focus at the boundaries that affect us physically and culturally.
In recent years, Ringborg has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Moderna Museum, Stockholm, and at the Istanbul Biennale. At this exhibition, ARoS will be presenting the artist with the Young Talent award, a grant made possible with generous support from the foundation Det Obelske Familiefond. The Young Talent award is designed to promote and honour young Scandinavian talents who have not yet had their institutional breakthrough. The grant totals DKK 100,000 and will be awarded three times during the three years this exhibition series is scheduled to run. The grant is not open to applications, but will be awarded to an artist nominated by ARoS among those taking part in the exhibition series ARoS FOCUS // NEW NORDIC 2015-2017.
