Ai Weiwei, Yi Yi, 2015

On the night between the 26th and 27th of January 2016, Ai Weiwei announced on Instagram and Twitter his wish to pull his installation Yu Yi, 2015 from ARoS’ current exhibition A New Dynasty – Created in China in protest at Denmark’s policies on asylum seekers. Since then museum director Erlend G. Høyersten and Ai Weiwei have been trying to reach a solution. The outcome of their dialogue is that Yu Yi will be removed from the exhibition.

”After the week-long dialogue we feel disappointed that the work is now to be removed. I am a strong believer in dialogue and in the power of art, also as a means of setting agendas. Various solutions have therefore been considered. Unfortunately, the result is that Ai Weiwei wants the work withdrawn. I am of course extremely sorry that our guests will no longer be able to experience Yu Yi. We have done our utmost to come up with another solution”, says Erlend G. Høyersten, ARoS.

The work will be dismantled Monday 15 February.
