More about Local Ways to Global Art

ARoS Aarhus Art Museum owns a significant collection of Danish art through 300 years. The contemporary international art collection includes your rainbow panorama by Olafur Eliasson which has become a landmark of Aarhus. The museum is Denmark's oldest museum collection outside Copenhagen and was established by prominent citizens in Aarhus in 1859, who wanted to bring art to the people. The museum started in a loft room at the Town Hall until the Aarhus Art Museum in Mølleengen was built in 1877. In 1967, the museum's third address, Vennelystparken, was built, and finally ARoS opened in 2004 – now an international art museum of 18.000 m2 built by the architects Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen.
